Gym Rules and Guidelines

General Facility Guidelines

  • Please remove all outdoor footwear upon entering the gym and place neatly on the boot racks.
  • Absolutely no shoes on the mats!
  • Before class remain quiet & calm in the lobby. Do not disrupt the class in session.
  • The mat area is restricted to students and instructors. Spectators must stay off the mats.
  • No food, drink or gum allowed on the mat.
  • Parents/Guardians of students in Little Grapplers (ages 4-6) classes are required to stay in the facility during class.
  • No running, grappling or roughhousing in the lobby area.
  • Leduc BJJ is a family friendly facility. Profanity is not acceptable and will not be tolerated on or off the mats. This applies to spectators as well as students.
  • There is a zero-tolerance policy for verbally or physically abusive behaviour and Leduc BJJ reserves the right to remove anyone from class or from the premises at the discretion of staff.

Personal Hygiene, Uniform and Safety for Grapplers

  • Training gear and Gi must be clean and dry at the beginning of every class.
  • The Gi must be maintained in good condition without rips & tears.
  • Remove all jewelry including earrings, piercings, rings, bracelets, necklaces, watches etc.. before training
  • Fingernails and toenails need to be clipped short, without sharp or jagged edges
  • As BJJ is a close contact sport all students are expected to practice good personal hygiene and arrive for class clean and free of strong/offensive odours (ie smoke, overly strong perfume/cologne, body odour)
  • No clothing shall be allowed on the mat that could risk student safety or damage to the mat surface. This includes the hoodies with strings, pants/shorts with cargo pockets or loops, loose or baggy clothing, rivets on jeans, exposed zippers etc…
  • We recommend washing or sanitize hands before going onto the mats and immediately after class

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

Student Expectations

  • Students should strive to represent the gyms core values; Respect, Discipline, Self Control, Honesty, Inclusiveness, Cooperation & Humility.
  • Always be polite and respectful to everyone. There is zero tolerance for teasing, bullying, harassment or discrimination
  • Stay off the mats until invited by the instructor.
  • Bow as you are entering or leaving the mat area. 
  • Line up according to BJJ belt rank & stripes at the start and end of each class.
  • Bow to instructor before commencing training and again upon completion of training session
  • Address Black belts as “Professor” and all non-black belt instructors as “Coach”.
  • All higher belts are expected to set an example for, guide and show kindness to lower belts. Help new students and show them the way. Lead by example and demonstrate cooperation and teamwork
  • If you are late for class, wait patiently on the side until you can get the instructors approval to join class.
  • At the end of each class shake hands or fist bump with all training partners. Avoiding shaking hands is considered disrespectful and will not be tolerated.
  • Do not teach anyone any techniques you learn in class without the instructor’s formal permission

Sparring Etiquette

  • When rolling use care, control and caution. Keep yourself safe at all times and always be considerate of your training partners safety
  • Always respect the tap and stop immediately. In training tap early & tap often to avoid injuries
  • Display good sportsmanship and humility. We don’t brag/gloat when we win and we don’t pout when we lose.
  • Shake hands before and after each match, regardless of the outcome.
  • Mouthguards are optional but recommended
  • Inform the instructor immediately of any incidents or injuries in class
  • Any attempt to injure deemed by the instructor as malicious or outside of the parameters of the sport can result in expulsion from class. BJJ is for self defence, we do not train bullies.

PARENT & SPECTATOR GUIDELINES

  • Make every reasonable effort to drop students off on time for their class and pick them up promptly afterwards
  • Please leave the class instruction to the instructors. No coaching your child or other students during class.
  • Focus on your child’s effort and attitude in class rather than match outcomes.
  • During classes if you need to take a phone call, or engage in conversation please do so in the lobby away from the mat area so to not disturb class instruction.
  • If you bring siblings and other children to the gym you are responsible to supervise them and ensure they too are following the gyms rules and regulations and not disrupting class
  • If your children use the toys or colouring supplies available in the lobby, we kindly ask that you clean up after yourselves and ensure things are put away neatly when they are done.
  • Be respectful to other parents and spectators, or even better make a new friend.
  • Support and encourage your child, as well as the other children in class. Positive reinforcement helps growth and improvement more than criticism
  • If you have questions or concerns, please see the office or approach the instructor between classes, please do not interrupt classes
